It looks like we’re going through a long, Indian summer. These dreary, hazy, humid days are putting a little damper on the joy of changing seasons. But, no matter how much summer wants to fight it, fall is right around the corner and so is cooler weather. With that said, it’s time to break out the knits, the jackets, the boots (oh the glorious boots!) and get to layering. I’m sharing five of my fall wardrobe staples that act as perfect bases or statements for staying stylish this autumn. This is by no means a groundbreaking collection, but nonetheless, I hope they inspire you!
1. The Classic Flannel Shirt
Flannel is a fabric, and a print that screams cooler weather. It’s thicker material can be used as light cover up for warmer days or as shirt or layering piece under sweaters and jackets. Flannels can also be tied around the waist, adding an instant cinching effect and interesting silhouette to any outfit!
2. (P)leather Anything!
I think leather goes without saying, but I’m going to say it anyway. Leather is a very heavy and sweaty fabric for warmer months, but is an effortlessly chic (and not to mention warm) fabric for fall. With all the different style applications and forms it can be found in, the possibilities are endless!
Tip: Play around with colored leathers too! Dark, forest greens, navys, deep reds and even brown can add an unexpected element to the already popular leather look.
3. Cozy, comfy knits
Knits are one of my favorite parts of the fall wardrobe. I’m naturally a cold person. As such, there’s nothing I love more than being enveloped in comfy, warm knits on a brisk fall morning. Sweaters come in so many different patterns, textures, colors and sizes. There’s a lot to play around with here. Experiment with cropped and oversized styles and don’t be afraid to layer long shirts underneath.
4. A Vision in Velvet
Velvet is a material iconically linked to cooler weather. It adds great contrast to denim, leather, canvas, cotton and pretty much most other fabrics, which makes it perfect for autumn layers. Velvet can be used in unexpected places, like for shoes, hats, and even purses.
5. Boots, Boots, Boots!
I couldn’t end this post without boots! I am definitely a shoe-obsessed person and my greatest joy during the colder months is wearing awesome stompers. If you should invest a great deal of money in any part of your wardrobe, I most certainly recommend it be your shoes. You want a pair (or a few) that will not only keep you warm, but will go seamlessly with most of your clothes.
Tip: Pay careful attention to the hardware on your boots. If the zipper or buckles are gold, silver or rose gold and that clashes with your typical jewelry or the tones of your wardrobe, it might limit it’s long term wearability.
I have these under honorable mentions because they are way too obvious to include in my favorite fall fashion staples. You can easily update your summer wardrobe by adding thick cardigans, dark wash denim and fun fall accessories like beanies, scarves, gloves and knee high socks.
Feel free to comment about what some of your favorite fall staples are 😀
Have a great fall and see you in my next post!
